Ukrainian drones attacked a gas processing plant in Orenburg, Russia, causing a fire at the site.
The Exilenova+ Telegram channel published the report.
Local authorities, including regional governor Yevgeny Solntsev, also effectively confirmed the attack, which took place early on June 24.
In the morning, an official announced a massive drone attack on the region. According to him, several drones were allegedly shot down by Russian air defenses over an industrial facility in Orenburg.
The governor also reported that emergency services are working at the site and that no information about casualties has been received.
Meanwhile, data from the NASA FIRMS fire monitoring service and reports from local residents on social media indicate that there are fires on the site. Several active fire hotspots have been detected.
A Russian official reminded that in the Orenburg region, the publication of photos and videos involving UAVs is prohibited.
After 4 a.m., Orenburg Airport also suspended takeoffs and landings under the Kover (Carpet) plan, which was introduced after drones were detected in the region’s airspace.
The Orenburg Gas Processing Plant is located in the settlement of Kholodnye Klyuchi, which is part of the city of Orenburg. The facility is part of the structure of the company Gazprom.
The distance from Ukraine’s state border to the Russian plant reportedly affected today is over 1,000 kilometers. It was previously attacked by drones last October.
The plant is one of the key elements of Russia’s gas infrastructure and is considered the largest gas chemical facility in the world – its annual capacity is about 37.5 billion cubic meters of gas and over 1 million tons of gas condensate.
The enterprise’s product range includes: processing of natural gas, gas condensate, and oil; production of marketable dry gas, stabilized gas condensate, sulfur, liquefied petroleum gases, butane-propane mixture, and odorants.
