Ukrainian strike drones hit an oil refinery in Volgograd, Russia, and the port of Temryuk on the coast of the Sea of Azov.
According to Astra, fires erupted at both facilities after the attacks, as reported by local authorities and eyewitnesses.
The strike on the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery in Volgograd became known during the night of May 29. Local residents reported numerous explosions across the city on social media.
After analyzing available videos posted online, Astra also concluded that the fire broke out at this particular facility.
Later in the morning, Volgograd Region Governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed the drone attack on the region.
According to him, fires broke out at a synthetic fiber plant in the city of Volzhsky and at fuel and energy facilities in southern Volgograd as a result of ‘falling drone debris,’ along with several ‘localized blazes.’ He claimed that the fires had already been extinguished.
On the morning of May 29, the operational headquarters of Russia’s Krasnodar region reported a fire on the territory of the seaport of Temryuk “caused by falling drone debris.”
A total of 47 firefighters and 14 vehicles, including teams from Russia’s Emergency Ministry, were deployed to put out the fire. Preliminary reports indicate that no one was injured.
The Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka refinery is the largest oil products producer in Russia’s Southern Federal District.
The facility has a processing capacity of 14.8 million tons of petroleum products per year. It specializes in deep crude oil refining and produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, and other petroleum products. The plant is located 475 km from the state border with Ukraine.
This is at least the tenth strike on this Russian refinery since the start of the full-scale war.
