China has deployed a small floating platform in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, where it was spotted near Scarborough Shoal.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported this.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the object, measuring approximately 6×6 meters, was first spotted at the entrance to Scarborough Lagoon in early June.

It was later observed inside the lagoon, where Philippine patrols were operating.

Philippine authorities said the platform may have had personnel on board, but Chinese authorities described the structure as a temporary research facility.

The incident prompted diplomatic protests. Manila lodged a formal protest with Beijing, while Taiwan also expressed concern about the object’s appearance in the disputed maritime zone.

Observers note that the platform did not remain in one place. It was seen both at the entrance to Scarborough Shoal and inside the reef system, after which the object disappeared from the observation area.

Scarborough Shoal is located about 200 kilometers west of Luzon Island and is of strategic importance for controlling fishing grounds and sea routes in the region.

The Philippines says China has maintained a permanent coast guard presence in the area since 2012, effectively restricting access for local fishermen.

An international arbitration panel rejected China’s claims to “historical rights” in the region in 2016, but Beijing has not recognized the ruling and has continued its policy of de facto control through patrols and infrastructure.

Analysts say the floating platform may be part of a broader strategy to consolidate influence without formally establishing military bases, using scientific and civilian activities. They argue that even temporary facilities can create precedents that affect the behavior of coastal states and increase pressure in disputed maritime areas.

Militarnyi previously reported that in November 2025, two Philippine maritime patrols thwarted China’s attempt to violate Philippine sovereignty in the Scarborough Shoal area.
