Canada and Nordic Countries Agree to Strengthen Arctic Defense

Canada and the Nordic countries have agreed to deepen security cooperation to counter Russia in the Arctic.

The nations also agreed on plans to increase defense production. This is stated in a declaration by the Arctic region countries, which was released by the Canadian government.

The prime ministers of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Canada, who met in Oslo, stated that their goal is to strengthen collective defense. The parties agreed to pay special attention to the Arctic and to work together with local communities to develop the region, combat climate change, and strengthen security.

The countries will support NATO’s efforts to strengthen defense in the Arctic and on the Alliance’s eastern flank, particularly through participation in military exercises and missions.

The partners also plan to expand the defense industry, develop innovative technologies, and strengthen resilience against hybrid threats.

The day before, NATO launched the Arctic Sentry military mission to strengthen its presence in the Arctic as part of its commitments to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has emphasized the vulnerability of the region, particularly Greenland.
