Australian Companies to Develop Interceptor Drone for Ukraine

Two companies from South Australia have joined forces to develop and manufacture Arrow interceptor drones for delivery to Ukraine.

This was announced by Chris Picton, Minister for Defence and Space Industry for the State of South Australia.

The agreement calls for the integration of munitions manufactured by Zero Dawn into Praetorian Aeronautics’ Arrow counter-drone system. The system is designed to detect and intercept drones and other unmanned aerial systems in the face of enemy countermeasures.

Under the memorandum, the companies will collaborate on detailed integration, testing, certification, production preparation, and identifying market entry opportunities.

The signing of the memorandum was preceded by tests during which the companies successfully conducted a ground test of the warhead integrated into the interceptor.

The test was observed by Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia. Praetorian and Zero Dawn plan to export this system in 2027 to meet Ukraine’s urgent operational needs.

Praetorian Aeronautics is an Australian defense company founded in 2024 that specializes in autonomous aviation systems and software for countering drones.

Praetorian’s current product line consists of the Dagger autonomous interceptor drone, the Venator multi-purpose UAV, and the Hadrian command-and-control system, which uses artificial intelligence to assign targets to interceptors. Currently, there is no publicly available information about the Arrow interceptor or its specifications, so it is likely a new development.

Zero Dawn is an Adelaide-based Australian defense company specializing in the development of modular warheads. It claims to have in-house capabilities in research, design, prototyping, manufacturing, work with explosive materials, and ammunition testing.

The company also develops warheads in collaboration with a specialized partner and claims it can take a project from concept to a tested prototype in 30 days.

As a reminder, since mid-2026, the Australian Defence Force has joined the Norwegian-led multinational Operation Legio to train Ukrainian military personnel in Poland.

Since January 2023, Australian military personnel have been working alongside the multinational training mission Operation Interflex, led by the United Kingdom, as part of Operation Kudu. During this time, they have trained more than 3,650 Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel in basic infantry tactics, leadership, and military skills.
