Ukrainian marines use AMX-10RC armored reconnaissance vehicles as mobile artillery to strike the invaders in the Kherson region.
Footage of the equipment’s use was published by the press service of the brigade on social media.
Operators of the AMX-10RC from the 37th Marine Brigade use lightly armored wheeled fighting vehicles to conduct high-trajectory fire from indirect fire positions towards invaders on the left bank of the Kherson region.
The use of these vehicles at night additionally hides improvised “gunners” from enemy drones. The high mobility of wheeled vehicles allows them to quickly leave the firing position after several shots.
Marines fire their 105mm guns blindly, relying on aerial reconnaissance data. Reconnaissance, in its turn, provides target identification and fire adjusting.
However, as noted earlier, ammunition for guns is limited: AMX-10RC uses reduced pressure ammunition with a smaller shell and, accordingly, a different caliber that does not match other 105mm tank ammunition.
Ukrainian crews of AMX-10RC reconnaissance vehicles transferred by France have already participated in the assaults of Russian positions and the liberation of territories in Zaporizhzhia last summer.
In a report by Radio Liberty, the marines stated that their experience using these vehicles offensively in the role of tanks was not successful and was extremely disappointing. AMX-10RC is significantly lighter, and therefore the crew inside the AMX is more vulnerable.
“We are trying to work so as not to go as a breakthrough, because it is not a tank at all, it is more like an APC, not even an IFV. Light armor, but at the expense of the gun, they consider that this is a tank,” “Casper” says.
However, the gun of the combat vehicle proved effective. Combined with the maneuverability and speed of the French vehicle, it was well-received by the Ukrainian marines.
“The gun here of the 105mm caliber, quite good, fires exactly if you make a reconciliation,” notes the advantages of the gun of the French armored vehicle “Casper.”
However, the adaptation of gun-armed vehicles for artillery tasks atypical for them remains a consequence of the shortage of ammunition and traditional weapons that the Ukrainian army is now undergoing.
