Nine Countries Withdraw from Czech Initiative to Procure Ammunition for Ukraine

The Czech initiative to procure artillery ammunition for Ukraine has lost half of its international donors — the number of countries funding the program has dropped from 18 to 9.

This was reported by the Financial Times, as cited by European Pravda.

This refers to the Czech program for the centralized procurement of ammunition for Ukraine on the global market, which has become one of the key sources of artillery shells for the Ukrainian Armed Forces amid a production shortage in Europe.

According to the FT, the funding cut came after a shift in policy in Czechia, where Prime Minister Andrej Babiš advocated for reducing spending on support for Ukraine and redirecting resources toward domestic needs.

Despite this, Czech President Petr Pavel stated that the initiative will continue, albeit at a slower pace.

It is estimated that through this mechanism, Ukraine received up to half of all large-caliber artillery ammunition from Western partners.

Since the program’s launch in 2024, over 4 million artillery shells have been purchased for Ukraine through it.

Some of the countries that withdrew from the program have not necessarily completely ceased aid to Ukraine but may have shifted to direct purchases of ammunition outside the Czech mechanism.

However, the reduction in the number of participants creates risks for the predictability of supplies, especially against the backdrop of intense combat operations and Ukraine’s constant need for artillery ammunition.

The Czech initiative was a response to the European defense industry’s inability to quickly address the shell shortage, which became acute in 2023–2024.

Reduced funding for this program may force partners to seek alternative mechanisms for supplying Ukraine with ammunition.

The issue of continued support for the initiative is likely to be one of the topics of discussion among allies ahead of upcoming NATO meetings and European defense consultations.
