A woman will command the Australian Army for the first time since its founding 125 years ago, Defense Minister Richard Marles announced on Monday.

Reuters reported on the “deeply historic” appointment.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Army following a three-decade career.

She has served in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and the Middle East over the years.

“Her achievement means she will become the first woman to command the service in Australian history,” Marles told reporters.

“And this is a deeply historic moment. As Susan told me, you can’t be what you can’t see,” Marles added.

The Australian Army is undergoing a major transformation, equipping itself with long-range firepower, drones, and other modern combat capabilities.

Coyle highlighted her experience in areas such as cyber warfare.

“This broad experience provides a solid foundation for fulfilling command responsibilities and earning trust,” she said.
