Elbit Produces First SIGMA NG Self-Propelled Howitzer for USA Potential M109 Replacement

Elbit America has announced the completion of the first SIGMA NG (Next Generation) self-propelled artillery system in the USA.

This system was developed for the U.S. Army as part of its self-propelled artillery modernization program. It aims to demonstrate a rapid shift to fully operational, highly automated solutions, according to Army Recognition.

The SIGMA NG is fitted with a 155mm gun, 52 calibers in length, mounted in a remotely operated turret.

The 23-liter chamber complies with NATO standards and allows for the use of the full range of modern ammunition.

The main exception in production is the barrel: it is manufactured in the USA but is finished in Israel before integration.

The howitzer is based on the Oshkosh Defense LVSR 10×10 chassis, ensuring compatibility with the U.S. Army’s logistics systems.

The crew consists of three soldiers, who operate from a protected cabin without having to leave the vehicle while performing fire missions.

Four hydraulic stabilizers are used for stabilization during firing.

The SIGMA NG can carry 40 rounds with modular charges.

The automated loading system ensures a high rate of fire and minimizes the time spent in position.

The turret with 360° rotation eliminates the limitations typical of many guns mounted on wheeled chassis, which require moving the vehicle to change the firing direction.

Elbit America emphasizes that the SIGMA NG is directly derived from the Israeli Roem program, which is already replacing the outdated M109 in the Israeli military.
