NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that the world could face its most dangerous situation since World War II, with Russia and China acting aggressively at the same time.

He stated that China is closely watching developments around Taiwan and, if military action begins there, Beijing could push Moscow to escalate the conflict in Europe, according to Bild.

Rutte stressed that such coordination between the two countries would create a global security crisis. A Chinese attack on Taiwan could coincide with Russia stepping up its aggression in Europe, leaving NATO facing the risk of a two-front war.

The Alliance is already preparing a multi-layered deterrence system. It includes strengthening the Ukrainian army, creating a “coalition of the willing” in Europe, and involving the United States. The goal is to show Moscow and Beijing that any attempt at aggression will be met with a decisive response.

The Secretary General stressed that European countries must increase defense spending and expand weapons production. Only in this way, he said, can readiness for the worst-case scenario be ensured.

NATO is paying special attention to the Arctic and the North Atlantic – regions where the interests of the United States, Europe, Russia, and China intersect. Control over these areas is critical to transatlantic security.

Rutte also noted that NATO remains a united and strong alliance. In the event of a coordinated attack by Russia and China, the Alliance is ready to act on land, at sea, and in the air.
