The Pentagon has published a list of munitions included in the new aid package for Ukraine.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced the contents of the package on its website.
The DoD marked additional security assistance as an “extraordinary measure” to address some of Ukraine’s most pressing security and defense needs.
This package, worth up to $300 million, includes items to meet Ukraine’s needs for air defense, artillery, and anti-tank weapons.
The package includes:
The source of the funds is “savings on contracts from previously allocated supplemental funding that can be used to replenish the DoD’s inventories.”
The package, the report says, provides a short-term stop gap, but it is nowhere near enough to meet Ukraine’s battlefield needs.
“Without supplemental funding, DoD will remain hard-pressed to meet Ukraine’s capability requirements at a time when Russia is pressing its attacks against Ukrainian forces and cities,” the Pentagon said.
The Pentagon insists that security assistance to Ukraine remains a smart investment in US national security.
“It deters potential aggression elsewhere in the world while strengthening our defense industrial base and creating highly skilled jobs for the American people,” the Pentagon noted.
It is worth noting that the Pentagon did not specify which munitions are included in HIMARS. The US systems in Ukraine are capable of using GMLRS missiles and long-range ATACMS missiles.
Prior to the package announcement, U.S. officials told Politico that this time, the U.S. would send ATACMS missiles to Ukraine.
