The SSU counterintelligence detained a Russian agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, who was operating in the Zaporizhzhia region.

The suspect was conducting reconnaissance activities to search for military facilities and local defense industry enterprises.

First of all, he was interested in enterprises involved in the production of ammunition for heavy armored vehicles and missile and artillery weapons.

In addition, the suspect was locating sites of temporary deployment of Armed Forces of Ukraine units and military equipment on the territory of the regional center and conducted photo and video recordings with reference to the area.

To be less noticeable, he traveled around the city by public transport and covertly photographed infrastructure facilities that he believed to be production facilities.

In his opinion, these buildings could have temporarily housed military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or production facilities for defense equipment.

The SSU officers documented the facts of the Russian agent’s reconnaissance and subversive activities and detained him in his own home.

His mobile phone was also seized. According to the investigation, the defendant is a former deputy head of a department of the former regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who resigned from the service in 2014.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he was recruited by the officer of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, with whom he studied back in the USSR. In the fall of 2023, he started to carry out intelligence activities.

To communicate with the enemy, he used a messenger app through which he sent photos and videos. The detainee is currently in custody. He is facing life in prison.

Militarnyi previously reported that the Security Service counterintelligence detained an official from one of the Ukrainian Railways hubs in Dnipro.

According to the investigation, the railway worker was collecting information about the railway routes of transportation of military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the direction of the Russian special services.
