The Spanish government will transfer six Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine as part of military aid.
Margarita Robles, Spanish Minister of Defence, voiced this in her speech at a plenary session in Congress.
She noted that there could be more tanks if necessary, and that allied countries would demand it.
Robles also reported that the tanks planned to be integrated into the future tank battalion are currently being repaired and modernized.
The government expects the tanks to be shipped in late March or early April.
Previously, Militarnyi reported that the Spanish government was considering transferring 4 to 6 Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine as part of the “tank coalition” in the first delivery. The final figure for the equipment transferred would depend on the technical condition of the tanks.
The final figure for the equipment transferred would depend on the condition of the 53 tanks stored at the base in Zaragoza.
The main goal of the “tank coalition” is to transfer the first equipment to Ukraine as quickly as possible so that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would have two tank battalions by the spring.
Spain will also train the Ukrainian crews. The training period is planned to last 2.5 months. During this time, the equipment will also be modernized.
In addition to Spain, training is also provided by Poland, where on February 13, the training of Ukrainian soldiers under the EUMAM Ukraine European Union training mission has already begun.
The training of Ukrainian servicemen was organized on the basis of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade’s training infrastructure in Świętoszów, which is part of the 11th “Lubuska” Armoured Cavalry Division.
The training of Ukrainians in Germany started at the same time. The course will take place mainly at the training ground of the Armoured Corps Training Centre in Münster, Lower Saxony. There, the Ukrainian crew has already fired the first shot with the Leopard 2A6 tank.
