With modern armament, Ukraine could knock the invaders out of the country.
This was stressed by Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in his interview with the Bild.
He noted that even if the war would last for years, the West should keep on supporting Ukraine.
“Ukrainians are courageously defending themselves against the Russian invaders. Although Russia is waging an increasingly cruel war in Donbas, Ukrainian soldiers are putting up the courageous resistance. With more modern weapons, the likelihood that Ukraine would be able to knock out Putin’s troops from Donbas increases,” the politician said.
According to Stoltenberg, partners should support Ukraine even if they themselves are facing high losses – in particular in part of increased prices for energy and food.
“This is not comparable to the price that Ukrainians have to pay every day with many lives. And if from this war Putin makes the conclusion that he could just continue as he did after the 2008 war in Georgia and the occupation of Crimea in 2014, we will be paying a much higher price,” the Secretary-General of the Alliance said.
At the same time, the NATO Secretary-General stressed that the Alliance will not send its military to Ukraine, but will support it with weapons.
At the end of June, a summit of NATO member states will be held in Madrid. It will consider the matters of membership of Sweden and Finland in the Alliance.
In addition, decisions will be made on the new Strategic Concept of NATO and assistance to Ukraine.
It was previously reported that the United States is considering doubling the number of HIMARS systems designated for Ukraine.
