On the night of July 29, Russian invaders struck a correctional facility in the Zaporizhzhia region with an airstrike.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported this in his Telegram channel.
As a result of the hostile airstrike, 16 people were killed and 35 were injured.
“During the night, the enemy shelled the Zaporizhzhia district eight times, reportedly using FAB bombs. The correctional facility was also hit. Sixteen people died, and 35 were wounded,” Fedorov wrote.
According to him, medical assistance is currently being provided to the victims.
The attack destroyed the penitentiary building, and nearby private houses were also damaged.
The State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine later reported that the Russians had launched an air strike on the Bilenka correctional colony in Zaporizhzhia on July 28, 2025, at approximately 11:28 p.m.
The enemy attack caused significant damage: the institution’s headquarters, the quarantine section, and the institution’s dining hall were completely destroyed.
As a result of the attack, as of 10:00 a.m. on July 29, 17 convicts were killed, 42 were wounded, and the seriously wounded were hospitalized in hospitals of the Ministry of Health.
About 40 more people suffered injuries of varying severity, and one employee of the facility suffered shrapnel wounds to the face.
“The wounded are in the medical unit, the duty room, and other departments of the facility, and all of them have been provided with assistance. The perimeter of the facility has not been damaged, and there is no threat of escape,” the statement said.
It is noted that the shelling of civilian infrastructure, in particular penitentiary institutions, is considered a war crime.
