In the United States, Army Major Kenneth Chungag has been arrested on charges of supporting a separatist group in Cameroon.
Chungag, who worked as a nurse at Fort Belvoir, is accused of helping militants plan attacks on both civilian and military targets, according to Task&Purpose.
FBI documents say he shared US military materials on tactics and weapons maintenance with members of the Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF). He also provided intelligence on the movements of Cameroonian troops. Investigators say he was part of the group’s ‘military council,’ where he served as ‘chief of defense operations.’
Chungag was born in Cameroon and later immigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen in 2003. He served in the US Army for more than 20 years. Authorities say he falsely claimed to be an Iraq War veteran during his contacts with militant leaders, although his actual role was in medical support.
The investigation also found links between Chungag and Mercy Ombaka, who was arrested for allegedly handling finances for the self-proclaimed Ambazonian government. Together, they are accused of organizing money transfers to buy Kalashnikov rifles and other weapons for the insurgency.
In May 2024, Chungag attempted to resign from the ‘military council’ due to a conflict with the group’s leadership. During a search, FBI agents found numerous deleted messages on his phone that matched evidence recovered from the devices of other participants in the conspiracy.
The armed conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions that began in 2017 has resulted in more than 6,500 deaths and the displacement of around half a million civilians. As of 2026, no country in the world has recognized Ambazonia’s independence, and the ADF continues to wage a guerrilla war against the government.
