US approves sale of 300 AIM-9X missiles to Norway

The US Department of State has approved the possible sale of AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder air-to-air missiles to Norway.

This was reported by the Office of Military Cooperation of the US Department of Defense.

The sale of missiles and related equipment was approved on May 2, 2025, for approximately $370.9 million.

As part of the package, the US Department of State has approved the sale of 300 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles, two AIM-9X Block II Special Training Missiles (NATM), 24 AIM-9X Block II Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM), 20 AIM-9X Block II navigation units and 20 navigation units for CATM.

The package also includes missile models for training, containers, software, training, spare parts, technical documentation, transportation services and engineering support.

RTX Corporation (formerly Raytheon Technologies), based in Tucson, Arizona, will be the prime contractor responsible for the implementation of this order.

It should be noted that the procurement of this type of missile is aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the F-35A fighters currently used by Norway.

Previously, the country integrated German IRIS-T missiles on its F-16s, as it participated in their development, but their integration on F-35s is currently impossible due to delays in the development of new software for the aircraft.

This work could potentially begin after 2030.

Earlier, Militarnyi reported that the Royal Norwegian Air Force received the first Joint Strike Missile (JSM) multi-purpose cruise missile.

The missiles will be carried by F-35As, of which there are 52 in the Norwegian arsenal.

The JSM missile was developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg as part of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.
