Ukraine will receive up to 25 Leopard 1 tanks by the summer, and Leopard 2A6s by the end of March

The Ukrainian military will receive the first Leopard 1 tanks by the summer of this year, and the Leopard 2A6s at the end of March.

The terms and volumes of deliveries were discussed during the visit of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to Ukraine.

Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, said that Ukrainian crews have already left for Germany to undergo training.

“Today, together with the German Minister of Defense, we had the honor to send off our military for training on Leopard 2. My colleague is really impressed with the training speed of Ukrainians gaining knowledge,” he wrote.

The Ministry of Defense of Germany reported that the Leopard 2A6 tanks will be ready to be shipped to Ukraine at the end of March.

Also, the German government agreed to transfer Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine. This regards the transfer of 100 tanks.

“There will be 20 to 25 of these tanks by the summer, about 80 by the end of the year, and over 100 Leopard 1 tanks by 2024. This is at least three battalions, along with the materials that will need to be purchased, spare parts, ammunition, and training,” said Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

As previously reported, the Netherlands, along with Denmark and Germany, are ready to supply Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine. The countries will also supply spare parts and train Ukrainian tank crews.

The equipment is planned to be purchased directly from the German industry.

It was reported that the German defense concern Rheinmetall will be able to transfer 88 Leopard 1 tanks, and another 99 will come from FFG.

However, many of these Leopard 1 tanks require repairs. It is not yet clear whether all 187 units will be able to be used on the battlefield, or whether a certain part of the equipment will be released for spare parts to restore other combat vehicles.

In addition, Leopard 1 tanks for Ukraine could be purchased from a private Belgian company. These are tanks that are stored in the warehouses of the OIP Land Systems company.
