Ukraine and Syria Sign Agreement on Cooperation in Mine Clearance

Ukraine and Syria have signed an intergovernmental agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of mine action.

This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine.

Under the agreement, Ukraine will assist Syria in implementing measures to clear and restore for productive use territories that were destroyed in war. Ukrainian experts will also train Syrian specialists in humanitarian demining and share their experience in personnel management in this field.

“The technologies we have been successfully using for several years to clear land, as well as our approaches and tools, can be useful to Syria as it clears its territories of mines,” said Ihor Bezkaravaynyi, Deputy Minister of Economy and Environment.

During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation inspected sites where Syrian specialists are currently working on clearance operations.

It is noted that the two countries began a dialogue on cooperation in the field of mine action as early as 2025.

The agreement outlines several areas of cooperation between the Syrian National Demining Center and the Ukrainian Center for Humanitarian Demining.

These include field training and professional development programs, the exchange of technical expertise, and the provision of modern equipment and technologies for surveying territories and detecting explosive ordnance.

Ukrainian teams and specialists will also visit Syria to assess areas affected by landmines and consequences of war, particularly in the north of the country.

Implementation of the agreement will begin with a pilot project in selected areas of the Idlib and Aleppo provinces.

In September, Syria also began the process of destroying the remaining chemical weapons that belonged to the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
