A group of wounded and seriously ill servicemen of the Defense Forces returned to Ukraine from Russian captivity.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced this.
This is part of the second stage of a large exchange agreed upon in Istanbul.
“Today, soldiers of our army, the National Guard, and border guards are at home. Everyone needs treatment, and they will definitely be provided with the necessary assistance. This is the second stage of the return of seriously wounded and seriously ill soldiers,” the President wrote on social media.
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War clarified that servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including the Airborne Forces, Navy, Air Force, Army, USF, as well as the State Border Guard Service and National Guard of Ukraine, have returned to their homeland.
Those released today include the defenders of Mariupol who had been in captivity for more than three years.
All of the liberated defenders are men, privates and sergeants.
It is noted that some of the Ukrainian soldiers released today were considered missing.
In general, Ukrainians who fought with the Russian invaders in the Donetsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk sectors are returning home.
The servicemen released from captivity will undergo the necessary medical examination, receive physical and psychological rehabilitation, as well as all due payments for the entire time they were in captivity.
Today’s exchange is part of a larger exchange in the categories of servicemen under the age of 25, as well as those who are seriously wounded and seriously ill. For security reasons, the exact number of people released will be announced after the exchange is completed.
On June 10, Ukraine returned the first group of wounded and seriously ill defenders from Russian captivity.
