Three Polish Citizens Detained on Suspicion of Spying for Russia

Three Polish citizens have been arrested in Poland on suspicion of spying for Russia.

Tomasz Siemoniak, Minister – Member of the Council of Ministers and Coordinator of Special Services, announced this.

Officers of Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained the suspects under an order from the Podlaskie branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office.

The three men, aged between 48 and 62, are accused of collecting information about the deployment of NATO troops in Poland and producing and spreading propaganda and disinformation materials.

“Białystok District Court ordered all suspects to be placed in pre-trial detention for three months. The investigation is ongoing,” Tomasz Siemoniak said.

At the end of March, Polish authorities also detained a serviceman from the 12th Greater Poland Territorial Defense Brigade on suspicion of spying for Russia.

Nine days earlier, he had allegedly taken part in a rally organized by the pro-Russian and anti-Western movement Rodacy Kamraci in Warsaw.

The espionage allegations concern the period from July 2023 to April 2024. The man joined the Territorial Defense Forces on March 8, 2024.

In its preliminary ruling, the court stated that the evidence collected so far points to a high likelihood that the suspect committed the alleged crime. The investigation concerns suspected cooperation with a foreign intelligence service.

In March, authorities in Greece also arrested a Polish citizen suspected of spying on NATO warships on the island of Crete.

According to investigators, the man had been living for several months in a van parked on Marathi Beach, near a naval base used by both Greek and NATO-allied fleets. During that period, he allegedly photographed military ships entering and leaving the base.
