The Spanish government announced the transfer of a new military aid package to Ukraine, which will include tanks, air defense systems, and artillery.
The Spanish Prime Minister announced the new tranche of aid during a meeting with the President of Ukraine in Madrid.
The Prime Minister said that part of the military aid was “air defense systems to protect civilians, infrastructure, cities that continue to suffer from attacks, as happened this weekend in Kharkiv.”
In addition, he announced the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks and unnamed artillery systems.
“We have already prepared another delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. And also guns that the Armed Forces of Ukraine need. We continue to work with the president’s team to see what alternatives are available to help Ukraine’s air security,” Sánchez said.
Previously, the El Pais newspaper, citing its own sources, published details of the 1.13-billion-dollar tranche that was to be announced during a meeting between the two politicians in Madrid.
According to the publication, the new aid package will include the delivery of a batch of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles, which will be added to the half-dozen already delivered in April. In total, the country will provide dozens of missiles, each worth about €2 million.
Also, 19 Leopard 2A4 tanks will be delivered in addition to the ten vehicles already delivered to the Ukrainian army last year.
The first ten tanks from the new batch are already undergoing major repairs after returning from storage bases and are expected to be sent to Ukraine by June 30, along with anti-aircraft missiles and a large amount of ammunition.
However, the basis of this year’s military aid package from Spain will be new models of weapons. These include 155-mm artillery shells, counter-drone systems, tactical vehicles, optoelectronic equipment for surveillance and reconnaissance, remote combat modules, mortars, infantry weapons, and other equipment.
Most of the ordered systems and weapons are manufactured by Spanish companies such as TRC, Indra, Escribano, Uro, Expal or Instalaza. The orders are scheduled to be completed in two years with the possibility of extension for a third year.
In addition, Spain will also expand the combat training program for the Ukrainian military by another 400 people.
