New Pantsir-SMD-E air defense missile systems are being installed on the rooftops of civilian buildings in Moscow.
The systems are transported and mounted using a Mil Mi-26 helicopter, according to military analyst Massimo Frantarelli on X.
The video shows one of the air defense systems being installed atop the Nordstar Tower business center in northern Moscow, on Begovaya Street.
The Pantsir-SMD-E is presented as an air defense system specifically adapted to counter drones.
Unlike the Pantsir-S1, the SMD-E combat module does not include 30 mm automatic cannons.
The system is equipped with two types of missiles:
The radar component includes a surveillance radar with an active phased-array antenna and a detection range of up to 24 km, as well as the 1RS2-1 millimeter-wave radar.
As early as 2023, Russia started installing Pantsir air defense systems on the rooftops of buildings in Moscow.
At that time, a Pantsir-S1 system was deployed on the main building of Russia’s Ministry of Defense in Moscow.
During the war, Russia has built a layered air defense ring around Moscow using these systems, reinforced by mobile fire units.
In 2025, Russia deployed over 40 additional Pantsir-S1 systems around Moscow, some of which were transferred from other regions. According to analyst Mark Krutov, more than 100 air defense systems have been added to strengthen Moscow’s defenses since 2023.
In addition, seven new towers for Pantsir air defense systems have been built around Putin’s residence.
