US President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), as acting director of US National Intelligence following the upcoming resignation of Tulsi Gabbard.
Trump announced this on the Truth Social, and the news was confirmed by CNBC and Reuters.
Following her resignation, coordination of the 18 US intelligence agencies will pass to Bill Pulte, who currently heads the FHFA and oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
In his statement, Trump emphasized that Pulte will continue to perform his current duties as head of the housing regulator while also serving as head of the intelligence community.
The US president also stated that Pulte has experience managing “America’s most sensitive issues,” including overseeing assets worth over $10 trillion.
“William has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago. During this period, he will remain Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac,” Trump wrote.
The appointment drew the attention of American observers because Pulte had not previously worked in intelligence or national security agencies.
Before joining the administration, he was known as a representative of the founding family of the PulteGroup construction corporation and a real estate investor.
As director of the FHFA, he has repeatedly found himself at the center of political controversies due to accusations against Donald Trump’s opponents regarding possible violations related to mortgage lending.
In particular, Pulte initiated a complaint against Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook, accusing her of possible mortgage fraud.
In addition, he filed complaints with law enforcement agencies against New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who had previously been involved in legal proceedings against Trump.
Pulte’s appointment signals Trump’s desire to tighten control over the US intelligence community by appointing politically aligned leaders to key positions.
Militarnyi previously reported that the US Director of National Intelligence exposed a CIA spy in Russia.
