Slovakia to Deploy Troops to Protect Polish and Romanian Airspace

Up to 101 soldiers from the Slovak Armed Forces will be deployed to Poland and Romania to participate in NATO’s Eastern Sentry airspace monitoring and air defense mission.

TASR reports that the government has approved the deployment to the two NATO countries.

They will also carry out tasks as part of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS).

Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák said that the Slovak Armed Forces are expected to help detect threats from drones using new 3D radars capable of detecting objects at distances of up to 350 km.

“We want to test these radar systems in real-world conditions. I believe this will not only contribute to protecting the airspace of our allies in Poland and Romania, but will also provide valuable experience in using the new capabilities at our disposal,” he said.

On August 27, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz thanked his Slovak counterpart, Robert Kaliňák, and the Slovak government for approving the participation of Slovak military personnel in Eastern Sentry.

“This is an important contribution to the security of NATO’s eastern flank and proof that allied solidarity is being translated into real action,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on the social media platform X.

NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission began on September 19, 2025, in response to a series of airspace violations involving the territories of NATO member states.

Slovakia is also combating hybrid threats on its own territory. Slovak police prevented a planned arson attack on the Skyeton manufacturing facility, where unmanned systems are produced.
