Satellite imagery has confirmed that Flamingo cruise missiles hit the Volgogradpromproekt chemical plant on the night of September 11.
The Exilenova+ community published the imagery.
According to the published imagery, one of the FP-5 missiles completely destroyed a 20-by-15-meter section of the plant’s main workshop.
Volgogradpromproekt is located in Volgograd’s Kirovsky District. It is a research and production company specializing in small-batch chemical production and manufacturing organophosphorus compounds, flame retardants, resins, and other specialized components.
One of Volgogradpromproekt’s key products is OSF, an organosilicon derivative of ferrocene containing iron compounds.
It is used as a catalyst and combustion-rate modifier for composite solid rocket propellants, allowing the combustion rate of rocket fuel to be regulated while maintaining its required properties.
In December 2023, the United States added Volgogradpromproekt to its sanctions list along with companies supporting Russia’s military-industrial base. The U.S. Department of the Treasury cited the production of ferrocene-containing combustion catalysts as the reason for the designation.
The largest customer of Volgogradpromproekt in Russian government procurement is the Perm Powder Plant, one of Russia’s largest defense enterprises, specializing in producing propellants and explosives for defense needs as well as the civilian market.
The plant produces components for more than 100 weapons systems, including engines for Grad and Smerch rockets for multiple rocket launchers, as well as air defense missiles.
The company is also known to participate in production cycles for Kalibr cruise missiles and air-launched anti-ship missiles.
Another major customer is Kamensky Chemical Plant, which produces solid propellant for rockets used by the Uragan, Smerch and Tornado-S multiple rocket launchers, Iskander-M and Kinzhal ballistic missiles, and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Another important area of Volgogradpromproekt’s operations is producing fire-resistant vinyl ester resins for shipbuilding. These resins serve as the polymer matrix in the manufacture of fiberglass and carbon-fiber composites.
According to open-source data, the company’s third-largest customer is the Amur Shipbuilding Plant, which is currently building Project 22800 Karakurt small missile ships.
