The Russian Navy has started the establishment of specialized unmanned systems regiments.
According to the Russian Life of a UAV Operator Telegram channel, these units are set to be created across all of Russia’s fleets.
The new regiments will be equipped with a diverse range of advanced robotic technology, including aerial and ground drones, as well as unmanned boats and underwater devices.
Their main tasks will include reconnaissance, striking targets, protecting ships, combating enemy drones, and neutralizing sea mines.
According to preliminary information, at least five such regiments are planned to be established: three of them will be deployed in the European part of Russia, while the other two will be stationed in the Pacific Fleet.
In the latter case, there is an emphasis on the need to strengthen control over the maritime areas between Primorye and Kamchatka due to the vast distances.
Forming similar units within the Caspian and Dnipro Flotillas is also being considered.
This move is part of a broader trend towards the creation of separate unmanned systems forces within the Russian Armed Forces.
As previously reported, Russian engineers are working to integrate FPV drones into a prototype naval reconnaissance and strike platform known as Katran.
The effort involves adapting the serially produced 10-inch Skvorec FPV drone for operations from a naval drone carrier.
The modified drones are expected to perform strike and reconnaissance missions within a 5–10 km radius from the host vessel.
The Katran unmanned boat, currently undergoing trials with Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, will serve as the launch platform. The first prototypes were delivered to the Russian Black Sea Fleet in March of this year for experimental operation.
