Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky starting October 29 to deliver humanitarian aid and prepare for the evacuation of civilians.
This was reported on the official website of the White House.
“First Lady Melania Trump successfully secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within the city of Oleshky,” the statement reads.
The local ceasefire is set to take effect on October 29, 2026.
“The residents of Oleshky have limited access to electricity, live amid mined roads, and are constantly subjected to military attacks. It was quite obvious that without my intervention, it would have been impossible to deliver humanitarian aid to the city and evacuate the elderly,” said First Lady Melania Trump.
The First Lady initiated negotiations with both countries and, acting as an official mediator, coordinated with the parties on key agreements, technical procedures, timelines, courses of action, and conditions for their implementation.
“Civilian representatives from both countries, who are not part of the military, will jointly visit the residents of Oleshky in their homes and determine what assistance they need. Those who wish to be evacuated will receive coordinated support and transportation to their chosen destination. I expect that some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” said First Lady Melania Trump.
The U.S. will also engage an American media organization to accompany Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground and document their work throughout the process.
Melania Trump learned about the critical situation in Oleshky during a private conversation at the “Fostering the Future Together” event, which took place in New York as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
“My representative and I immediately utilized the communication channel we had established with Russia and Ukraine during the previous six cases of reuniting 34 children with their families. Both countries promptly assigned teams to coordinate the complex technical aspects of the operation, including demining. Since then, all parties have been working around the clock,” First Lady Melania Trump explained.
According to estimates by the regional administration, the Russians are holding approximately 2,000 people hostage in occupied Oleshky, including nearly 50 children.
People are forced to survive without food, electricity, or water.
The city has been on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe for nearly a year—since late 2025.
The last time food was delivered to Oleshky by land was in late May, when local business owners were able to drive into the city in two commercial vehicles.
In the fall, the Ukrainian Defense Forces managed to deliver several shipments of food to occupied Oleshky using drones.
