Analysts have identified a Russian A-50U aircraft that Russia presented as “newly modernized,” even though its actual modernization was completed back in 2011.
On May 31, the Russian Telegram channel Fighterbomber reported that the military had received a “newly upgraded” A-50U.
However, analysts from the AviVector group clarified that the aircraft was not new; it had simply returned to service after repairs to some of its systems.
On May 30, this A-50U underwent a check of its ground communication systems following the completion of repair work.
The A-50U aircraft (RF-92957, tail number “Red 47”) was the first serially modernized airframe delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces in 2011.
During its modernization, the aircraft received upgraded electronics. The operator workstations were improved with high-resolution monitors and an enhanced situation display system. In addition, a new flight navigation system was installed.
The aircraft is equipped with the Shmel radar system, based on the Soviet Argon-50 onboard computer.
The A-50 can conduct reconnaissance of air, ground, and maritime targets.
During the war in Ukraine, Russia has lost at least two such aircraft. The first, RF-50601, was lost in January 2024, and another was lost over the Sea of Azov in February of the same year.
On the night of March 17, the 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant in the city of Staraya Russa, Novgorod region, was attacked. A-50 aircraft may have been present on the site.
