Russia may use captured Ukrainian drones to attack critical infrastructure in the Baltic states.
This information comes from Lithuanian military intelligence, according to LRT.
Through such actions, the Russians may be attempting to create uncertainty regarding the origin of the attack and deny responsibility for strikes on NATO territory. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed the intelligence agency’s assessment.
“We have information that Russia is considering the possibility of launching unconventional kinetic attacks against critical infrastructure in the Baltic region,” he said.
Kaunas also added that it is quite likely Russia could use Ukrainian-made drones for this purpose. The defense minister did not provide details about potential targets or the timing of any possible attacks.
Russia has likely already started using captured Ukrainian long-range drones for provocations, the possibility of which Poland had previously warned about.
This may be indicated by footage from a Ukrainian interceptor drone, which Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an advisor to the President of Ukraine on the development of defense technologies, released on August 1.
The silhouette of the aircraft in the footage, as well as the shape of the fuselage, wings, and tail, match the characteristics of Ukrainian FP-1/2 series strike UAVs.
The Russians may have obtained the drones after they were forced to land due to electronic warfare (EW) measures or crashed due to technical malfunctions. The invaders could have repaired, reprogrammed, or used the surviving drones to create copies.
The incident in Moldova on June 8, 2026, may also support this theory. During a massive Russian attack on Ukraine, one of the drones crossed the border and exploded on Moldovan territory. Local residents noticed Ukrainian inscriptions on the wreckage, and the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the UAV was most likely of Ukrainian origin.
In addition, in July, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz warned that Russia might use intercepted Ukrainian drones for false flag operations.
