New Rotation of U.S. Troops Heads to Lithuania

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced a new rotation of U.S. troops, who are already on their way to the country.

He posted a related message on his X page.

According to the head of state, the U.S. military presence is an indispensable element of Lithuania’s deterrence and collective defense.

Presidential adviser Davidas Matulionis clarifies that U.S. units are already on their way by train and will arrive shortly.

The exact number of troops has not yet been disclosed, but Lithuanian officials confirm that it will be no smaller than in previous rotations.

He also refuted rumors of any political conditions imposed by the U.S., particularly regarding the export of Belarusian fertilizers.

U.S. Contingent in Lithuania

The U.S. has regularly deployed battalion-sized units to Lithuania since 2019, and following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, changed their status to a continuous rotational presence.

Typically, a reinforced U.S. battalion consists of more than 1,000 service members and is equipped with a variety of heavy combat equipment.

Lithuania, for its part, has repeatedly stated its readiness to provide housing and infrastructure for up to 1,500 U.S. service members.

In June, the withdrawal of U.S. service members and their equipment began from Lithuanian territory following the completion of the U.S. Army’s rotational mission.

Unlike in previous years, the new U.S. contingent had not yet arrived in the country by the time the previous rotation’s service ended.

An adviser to the head of state stated that the country had received assurances from the United States regarding the continuation of the U.S. military presence in the country.
