Lockheed Martin is considering developing a specialized version of the F-16 fighter jet tailored to Ukraine’s needs.
Company sources told about this to The Defence Blog.
One option under consideration is a new F-16 variant with an extended range and a more advanced radar.
This would allow pilots to detect low-flying drones and cruise missiles earlier than the radars on Ukraine’s current aircraft can.
The company is also considering integrating European weapons into the fighter’s onboard systems, including guided aerial bombs and cruise missiles.
This would expand the range of weapons available to Ukrainian F-16s.
According to the sources, no concrete negotiations on developing a new variant are underway yet.
At the same time, Ukraine is interested in an affordable, versatile fighter that its pilots have already mastered in combat.
The sources told the media outlet that Lockheed Martin expects to pursue numerous joint projects with Ukraine.
The sources did not specify the cost of a specialized Ukrainian variant, the possible number of aircraft under the program, or which European weapons the company would prioritize for integration.
Implementing such a program would require approval from Washington. Until that approval is obtained, the initiative remains at an early stage.
Militarnyi previously reported that Ukraine’s industrial partners had accelerated F-16 fighter jet repairs due to the aircraft’s intensive operational use.
