Poland could become the target of Russian military or hybrid provocations designed to test NATO’s resolve and create conditions that could lead Western countries to reduce or end their support for Ukraine.
The report comes from Polish news outlet Onet, citing sources within Poland’s intelligence services and diplomatic circles.
According to the publication, NATO has already obtained intelligence pointing to the existence of such Russian plans.
The existence of these risks was first confirmed to the publication by a senior official in Poland’s intelligence leadership. The information was later independently confirmed by the ambassador of one of Poland’s key NATO allies.
In addition, a source close to the Polish president said that U.S. officials regularly brief Polish military leaders on newly identified Russian plans for a possible attack on NATO’s eastern flank. According to the source, Poland is among the countries considered a potential target of such an attack.
Among the possible scenarios are drone strikes on critical infrastructure, simulated air attacks intended to trigger the activation of Poland’s air defense systems, and hybrid incidents in border regions.
One scenario envisions Russian or Belarusian military personnel crossing into Polish territory under the pretext of a ‘navigation error’ or while conducting a supposed rescue operation following the emergency landing of a helicopter.
According to the publication’s sources, the primary objective of such a provocation would be to escalate tensions in Europe and create conditions that could lead to a suspension of Western military aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the sources emphasize that Russia currently lacks the military capability to wage a full-scale war against Poland or the Baltic states, as the majority of its forces remain committed to the war in Ukraine.
At the end of June, the head of Poland’s intelligence service, Colonel Paweł Szota, said his agency is taking into account scenarios involving Russian provocations against the Baltic states, including operations involving so-called ‘little green men’ – unmarked military personnel used in covert operations.
He also expressed concern over Belarus’s growing subordination to Moscow, particularly the construction of facilities capable of hosting nuclear weapons delivery systems, including the Oreshnik missile system, as well as ongoing nuclear exercises.
According to a report by the Swedish Parliament’s Defence Committee, Russia could attack NATO countries relatively soon if it judges the timing favorable in order to test the Alliance’s response and the credibility of Article 5, NATO’s collective defense clause.
