Norway has delivered a “significant number” of missiles to Ukraine for NASAMS air defense systems to ensure their uninterrupted operation amid ongoing Russian attacks.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said that air defense remains a top priority in Norway’s military assistance to Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, also confirmed the missile deliveries after speaking with Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik, though he did not specify which air defense systems the missiles were intended for.

“I also thank you for the transfer of critically important air defense missiles from stockpiles last week to protect our energy infrastructure from cruise missile attacks,” the defense minister said.

The NASAMS surface-to-air missile system uses AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles adapted for ground launch. It can also employ AIM-9 Sidewinder and extended-range AMRAAM-ER missiles, which offer greater engagement range.

NASAMS is designed to defend against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones. Depending on the type of missile used, its engagement range is between 20 and 50 kilometers.

The systems were supplied to Ukraine by several countries, including the United States, Canada, Lithuania, and Norway.
