North Korea has started building what is expected to be the country’s largest military factory, as arms deliveries to Russia continue to expand.

NK News reported the development, citing satellite imagery and official statements.

During a recent visit to Chagang Province, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reviewed plans for the massive facility, which is expected to span 5 to 10 hectares, twice the size of existing military production sites.

Satellite images show that the dismantling work at the construction site began in May, clearing space for what Kim described as a key component of North Korea’s future defense industry.

Kim said the new complex will house advanced machine-building capabilities and support the development of next-generation CNC (computer numerical control) machinery, technology essential for producing modern weapons.

The factory is expected to focus on intelligent, fast, and precise CNC machines that could enhance North Korea’s domestic military production and potentially support exports, including to Russia.

It will produce Ryonha-brand machines, which are increasingly used in North Korean industrial facilities. These machines may serve as an alternative to foreign-made equipment and could potentially be exported, bypassing sanctions.

Analysts suggest the machinery, like other military goods, could be supplied to Russia, which continues to seek modern equipment via third-party countries to evade international sanctions.

CNC machines are a global industry standard for producing large and complex parts, including artillery barrels, tank guns, and components used in ammunition manufacturing.

During a recent inspection of the Songgan plant, where artillery shells are produced, Kim was shown at least 50 machine tools manufactured by the domestic firm Huichon Ryonha.

Previously, Miltarnyi reported that Kim visited a military factory producing armored vehicles, including the 2025-model Cheonma-2 tanks, which feature main guns estimated to be 15 to 20 meters long.
