India Permits Ukrainians Linked to Myanmar Insurgents to Leave Country

A court in Delhi has allowed a U.S. citizen and six Ukrainian citizens to leave India, but the case against them—which concerns providing assistance to Myanmar insurgents—has not been dismissed.

According to The Times of India, the court issued this ruling on September 24.

The court ordered the foreigners to return to India within a month and to notify the court within 72 hours.

Previously, the court had granted all seven foreigners bail.

The court noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The physical presence of the defendants is not currently required. The court may accept written undertakings from them.

In March 2026, six Ukrainians and one U.S. citizen were arrested in India. They were detained at airports in Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow.

According to Indian authorities, the detainees had been staying for an extended period in the northeastern state of Mizoram, near the border with Myanmar.

The Ukrainians and the U.S. citizen are allegedly suspected of involvement in the illegal “import of large shipments of drones from Europe to Myanmar via India” for the use of “ethnic armed groups.”

Indian authorities accuse the Ukrainians of having ties to armed groups in the border region.

In addition, they are accused of violating immigration laws, specifically of staying illegally in an area closed to foreigners and of possibly crossing the border with Myanmar without proper authorization.

It later emerged that Russian intelligence agencies were monitoring the Ukrainians in India and passing on information about their movements to local law enforcement.
