Germany to Purchase Additional Launchers and Missiles for Patriot PAC-3

The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has approved the purchase of 248 anti-aircraft missiles and launchers for Patriot PAC-3 air defense systems.

The total purchase price is €1.63 billion. It is divided into two stages: the first involves the purchase of 120 missiles, and the second one—128 missiles and 16 launchers.

It is noted that the second part of the purchase is aimed at compensating for the weapons transferred by the Bundeswehr to Ukraine.

Procurement of additional Patriots

On July 4, it was reported that the German Budget Committee approved the purchase of four additional batteries of the Patriot PAC-3 anti-aircraft missile system.

According to the public data, Germany will order four anti-aircraft systems in an unknown configuration worth €1.35 billion.

These systems are to be delivered in addition to four more systems of a similar version ordered by the country in March 2024. The value of the contract at the time was $1.2 billion.

The eight new batteries of the Patriot air defense system should significantly strengthen the German Air Force, compensating for the three batteries that have been transferred to Ukraine in recent years as part of military assistance.

Deployment of the German Patriot in Poland

At the end of November, Militarny reported that the German Ministry of Defense proposed to the North Atlantic Alliance to deploy the German Patriot air defense system in Poland.

At the time, the Luftwaffe’s statement referred to preparations for the possible deployment of the First Missile Defense Wing (Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 1).

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that this step should help protect the logistics center in Poland, which is important for delivering aid to Ukraine.

The Patriot system can be deployed in Poland for a six-month period.
