In Germany, politicians and residents of the municipality of Friesenried are demanding financial compensation from the Bundeswehr over plans to build a radar site for the Arrow 3 missile defense system.

The German newspaper Kreisbote reports that the main concern is the potential contamination of local drinking-water sources.

Construction work could increase nitrate levels in the water to dangerous levels, potentially causing irreversible damage to the local water supply. As a result, the municipality may be forced to find alternative sources of drinking water.

Bundestag member Stephan Stracke has called on the German Air Force leadership to guarantee that all costs related to upgrading the water supply system will be covered.

In addition, regional roads are expected to suffer significant wear and tear, as around 15,000 trucks are expected to travel to the construction site.

Local and regional politicians, including state parliament members Bernhard Pohl and Andreas Kaufmann, are also calling on the federal government to fully cover the resulting costs and damages.

They have already approached the Bavarian State Chancellery for support, with joint talks involving the municipal leadership scheduled for September.

Alongside the politicians’ demands, residents in Friesenried have formed an initiative group to voice their concerns about the radar station’s proximity to residential areas.

The Bundeswehr has also announced plans to establish a second Arrow 3 air defense site in Bavaria, in Kaufbeuren. It will complement the system’s first battery, located near Berlin.

Construction of the site near the city is scheduled to be completed by 2028.

The German military also reported an incident involving three unidentified drones that attempted to locate the positions of Arrow 3 air defense systems.

The incident took place on December 1, 2025, over Annaburg Air Base in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
