The first of eight P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft ordered by Germany has taken to the skies in the United States.

Naval News reported on this.

“This week, the P-8A Poseidon has taken off for a first flight over Seattle (USA). Only at the beginning of February, the first aircraft finished receiving its paintjob. Now it was ready for take-off, although only for a transit flight to another Boeing-facility, where fitting out of equipment such as sensors will occur,” Bundeswehr Procurement Office informed.

The aircraft’s assembly was completed in early February, following a production process that began in October 2024.

Germany initially ordered five P-8A Poseidons in June 2021, followed by an additional three in November 2023. That same year, the country also ordered up to 80 Mark 54 lightweight torpedoes for the P-8A Poseidon.

All eight Poseidons will serve in the 3rd Graf Zeppelin Naval Air Wing, replacing the P-3C Orion patrol aircraft.

The P-8A Poseidon is considered an interim solution until Germany and France’s joint Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) project is completed.

As a result, the German Navy will not build separate infrastructure for the aircraft and will rely on existing facilities.

Some of Germany’s P-8A Poseidons will be stationed in Scotland to monitor Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic.

German industry plays a key role in the P-8A program: Boeing is collaborating with Elektroniksystem-und Logistik-GmbH (ESG) and Lufthansa Technik to provide system integration, training, and technical support.

P-8A Poseidon

The Boeing P-8A Poseidon is a patrol anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft designed to detect and destroy enemy submarines in patrol areas.

In addition, it’s also capable of conducting reconnaissance, anti-ship warfare, and search-and-rescue missions.

The aircraft is based on the civilian Boeing 737-800 airframe. Its combat load is up to 9 tons, which can be carried up across six external pylons and in five internal bays.

Armament includes Harpoon anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, sea mines, and depth charges. In addition, the P-8A can deploy sonar buoys and provide real-time maritime surveillance.

KC-46 Tanker Issues

Recently, Boeing suspended deliveries of KC-46 tanker aircraft after discovering structural cracks in two of the four latest units.

The issue has prompted inspections of all 89 KC-46 aircraft, including those already delivered to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
