The Pentagon has requested additional funding for the development of the F-47 sixth-generation fighter under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.
According to a recently published government document, an extra $400 million has been allocated to support the ongoing development of the F-47 prototype by Boeing and prepare for subsequent production.
The NGAD program has so far cost the U.S. Department of Defense a record $8.73 billion, with $2.33 billion allocated in 2024.
However, this figure is based on officially disclosed research and development contracts and may not include additional expenses such as infrastructure, production readiness, and personnel training.
In March 2025, the Pentagon selected Boeing’s project as the winner of the Next Generation Air Dominance competition.
At the time, it was announced that the Department of Defense would invest more than $20 billion in the F-47’s development and production.
The U.S. Air Force has also reported that NGAD demonstrators developed by Boeing and Lockheed Martin had logged hundreds of flight hours since 2019.
These demonstrators were created under the X-Plane program, designed to reduce technical risks associated with the development of new technologies.
Boeing unveiled its demonstrator in 2019, while Lockheed Martin presented its prototype in 2022.
General David Allvin said the United States was the first nation to field a sixth-generation aircraft, a capability developed largely in secret, having caught potential adversaries off guard and ensuring continued U.S. air dominance.
He added that F-47 would be less expensive and more adaptable to future threats compared to F-22.
