The European Union will allocate €20 million to the Republic of Moldova for the modernization of its air defense.
The decision was approved by the European Council on April 24.
This is already the seventh aid package for the country under the European Peace Facility (EPF).
The funds will be directed toward financing short-range air defense missile launchers and missiles.
This year, under the European Peace Facility, Moldova is expected to receive a total of €60 million.
The previous aid package, amounting to €40 million, was allocated on April 7 to enhance infantry mobility and improve air defense command and control.
“This measure is intended to fund light tactical vehicles, as well as command and control equipment for the tactical and operational integration of short-range air defense systems,” the European Council’s website stated.
The specific air defense systems have not been disclosed. However, Digi24 reported that the funding would go toward “eight short-range air defense systems, each equipped with launchers and 24 missiles.”
EU top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, emphasized that the European Union was Moldova’s primary security partner.
“The equipment we are providing – vehicles, protective gear, and ambulances – is an investment in peace and the protection of people. It is aimed at modernizing the Moldovan army and strengthening its defense capabilities, with full respect for Moldova’s neutrality. And this is not all,” she said.
Since 2021, the European Union has strengthened Moldova’s armed forces with nearly €200 million under the European Peace Facility program.
The EU Council emphasized its commitment to providing all necessary support to Moldova in overcoming the challenges it faces as a result of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. They also aim to enhance the country’s resilience, security, and stability in the face of “Russia’s destabilizing activities.”
