Drones Strike Kirishi Oil Refinery in Leningrad Region

Ukrainian drones struck the KINEF oil refinery (Kirishi oil refinery) in Russia’s Leningrad region.

The strike hit an area with critical refinery facilities.

At 2:48 a.m., a drone alert was declared in the area ahead of the attack. The alert remained in effect until 5:58 a.m. local time.

The KINEF oil refinery is located in the city of Kirishi, in Russia’s Leningrad Region, more than 900 km from Ukraine’s state border. The Russian oil company Surgutneftegas owns the refinery.

The oil refinery operates L-35-11/600 and LCh-35-11/600 units, as well as the more powerful LCh-35-11/1000 unit. These units are used to produce high-octane gasoline components and, subsequently, motor fuels.

The facility is one of Russia’s largest oil refineries and remains the only major oil refinery in the country’s northwest.

In 2024, the KINEF oil refinery processed approximately 17.5 million tonnes of crude oil, accounting for about 6.6% of Russia’s total oil refining.

That year, the refinery produced around 2 million tonnes of gasoline, 7.1 million tonnes of diesel fuel, 6.1 million tonnes of fuel oil, and 600,000 tonnes of bitumen.

The refinery’s production complex includes crude oil distillation, catalytic reforming, hydrotreating, and other processing units.

Ukrainian strikes have targeted the refinery before. In March 2026, following a drone attack, KINEF shut down its largest crude distillation unit, ELOU-AVT-6, with an annual capacity of around 8 million tonnes of crude oil, or approximately 160,000 barrels per day.

The unit accounts for roughly 40% of the refinery’s total processing capacity. Industry sources estimate the shutdown could last about a month.
