British Head of the Army stated that the UK currently faces threats from four countries, including Russia.
Britain must be ready to fight a war in three years, Gen Sir Roland Walker has said.
Walker predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be “very, very dangerous” when he emerges from the war in Ukraine and “will want retribution” against Western countries that support Ukrainian defenders.
This situation could arise regardless of whether Russia wins or loses.
“The bottom line is that when you think they are down, they will come roaring back to take revenge,” the General added.
He also warned that China was intent on retaking Taiwan, Iran was likely to pursue nuclear weapons and recalled the threat from North Korea.
According to him, all four countries are establishing relations with each other, exchanging weapons and technologies.
“That’s why by 2027-2028, this convergence may reach a kind of unity, and your ability to deal with them individually – with a specific crisis that can be resolved with a rules-based system, I think, will be greatly diminished,” Walker said.
At the same time, he clarified that Britain “is not on an inevitable path to war,” but it urgently needs to restore a credible force to ensure deterrence.
“We have enough time to prepare, act, and ensure the restoration of reliable ground forces to support the deterrence strategy,” the General shared.
Also, General Carsten Breuer, German Chief of Defence, noted that the Russians could be ready to attack NATO territory in 5-8 years. During this period, they are likely to gather sufficient personnel and weapons.
In June, it became reported that NATO is developing numerous corridors to move troops and weapons to the eastern flank of the Alliance in the event of war with Russia.
