Biden confirmed transfer of Abrams tanks to Ukraine

The President of the United States confirmed the intention to arm Ukraine with Abrams tanks.

Joe Biden announced this at a briefing on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive 31 Abrams tanks from the United States to protect territories and achieve strategic goals.

“Abrams tanks are the most capable tanks in the world. They are also extremely complex to operate and maintain. So we are also giving Ukraine the parts and equipment necessary to effectively sustain these tanks on the battlefield,” Joe Biden noted.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin were also present at this briefing.

Ukrainian tankers will begin training soon, probably in Germany with American instructors or in Poland, which also has Abrams tanks.

“We are starting the training of the Ukrainian military as soon as possible. It takes time to put these tanks on the battlefield. During this time, we have to make sure that the Ukrainians are fully prepared for their defense,” Biden said.

Ukraine will also receive eight M88 armored recovery vehicles for tank maintenance and more than 500 armored vehicles.

According to him, Putin thought that Europe and the USA would be weak in this situation, but he was wrong.

“We (allies – ed.) provided more than 2 million munitions, air defense systems in order to repel his brutal aggression,” the U.S. President said.

In addition, the U.S. President confirmed that the Ukrainian military will receive two battalions of German Leopard 2 main battle tanks from European countries.

He added: “I thank Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his leadership and for participating in our collective efforts to protect Ukraine.”
