U.S. President Donald Trump said he is not concerned about a possible Russian attack on NATO countries.
He made the remarks in a phone interview with Axios on Thursday, August 27.
“I’m not concerned… at all. There’s no problem,” Trump said in response to a question about a possible Russian provocation against NATO countries.
Previously, several U.S. media outlets reported that CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on Tuesday to warn Russia against attacking U.S. NATO allies, including Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Trump denied the reports and said Ratcliffe’s trip was routine.
“Ratcliffe sees his Russian counterpart once every six months or once every year. They have a very good relationship. There was no message and there was nothing unusual,” Trump said.
Two hours later, while speaking to reporters, Trump was asked again whether the U.S. had warned Russian authorities about potential attacks on NATO countries.
Trump replied that he did not want to comment on the matter, but added: “They are not going to attack NATO territory.”
Several European leaders have previously expressed serious concern and publicly warned that Russia could test NATO’s resolve, as well as Trump’s commitment to Article 5, which provides for the collective defense of the Alliance.
The New York Times, citing officials from two countries, reported that in late 2025, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin gathered his military leadership and set a goal for 2026: to “destroy NATO and the EU from within.”
Last week, NATO tested the readiness of its air forces in case Russia decides to launch a limited attack on one of the Alliance’s member states.
In the event of a Russian attack, Moscow could impose on European countries a form of warfare that would be bloody, prolonged, and politically extremely difficult for European societies and political elites.
