A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Australia after allegedly joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine for obtaining information for Russian intelligence.
ABC reports that, according to the Australian Federal Police, the man is an Australian citizen who also holds Russian citizenship. At the Brisbane Magistrates Court, he was identified as Vladimir Teslov.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said Teslov travelled to Russia in October 2024, where he received military training before returning to Australia.
In May 2025, he then travelled to Ukraine and joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces to gain access to sensitive information about Ukrainian soldiers, military units, and their locations.
Later, according to investigators, he allegedly attempted to pass this information to individuals he believed were acting on behalf of Russian intelligence.
“This alleged conduct is believed to have posed a security risk to Ukrainian military personnel,” Barrett said.
Australian police have charged Teslov with attempting to engage in intentional foreign interference. His case at the Brisbane Magistrates Court has been adjourned until October 2.
According to law enforcement authorities, Teslov is currently unemployed. It is not known whether he had any accomplices in Australia, but investigators have not ruled out further arrests.
During the investigation, police seized several electronic devices and other items considered relevant to the case. They will be sent for forensic examination.
In Australia, the offence of foreign interference carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Between July 11 and 13, unidentified drones entered the airspace of one of Australia’s most important air bases, where F-35A fighter jets are stationed. The drones were not shot down.
