Czech AH-1Z attack helicopters are being deployed to patrol the airspace near the Polish-Belarusian border.
This is evidenced by the helicopter’s flight path, according to data from the monitoring service AirNav Radar.
One of the flights took place on September 21, 2026, near the Belarusian city of Brest.
The route of the helicopter with tail number 0489 and call sign GHOST01 passes near the town of Biała Podlaska, and the flights themselves took place a few kilometers from the border.
The deployment of the new Czech helicopters was announced in March 2026, when the country’s government authorized the deployment of UH-1Y multi-purpose helicopters.
The second phase of the mission began in June 2026, when AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters were deployed to Poland for the first time as part of an overseas operation—two helicopters that replaced part of the UH-1Y Venom contingent.
The unit’s primary mission remains countering low-flying targets, supporting the Polish Armed Forces in defending the country’s airspace and NATO’s eastern borders as a whole.
The deployed helicopters are part of the 22nd Helicopter Aviation Base in Namest-nad-Oslava.
This deployment comes amid frequent flights by Russian drones and is part of efforts to maintain border security.
On July 24, 2026, a UH-1Y Venom helicopter crashed in the Czech Republic, killing one service member and injuring four others.
The helicopter was not directly involved in this mission, as helicopters of this type had already been withdrawn to the Czech Republic at the time of the accident.
Until the completion of the investigation conducted by the Czech Ministry of Defense and the military police, flights of all H-1 series helicopters were suspended. This also applies to the two helicopters that were in Poland at the time of the accident as part of the airspace protection mission.
The AH-1Z Viper is a twin-engine attack helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter, representing a major upgrade of the AH-1W SuperCobra.
The Viper’s primary armament is the A/A49E-7 turret equipped with a triple-barreled 20-mm M197 cannon. The side-mounted pylons carry six hardpoints with a total maximum combat payload of 2,615 kg. Its armament includes AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles, newer JAGM guided missiles, Hydra-70 unguided rockets, and APKWS guided rockets, as well as additional launchers.
The Target Sight System, based on a third-generation FLIR sensor, provides targeting capabilities during the day, at night, and in adverse weather conditions, while the Top Owl helmet-mounted system gives pilots a field of view with a thermal imaging projection directly onto the visor.
