Princess of the Netherlands Begins Military Service in the Air Force

Princess Catharina-Amalia has joined the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force with the rank of corporal.

She began working as a military trainee after successfully completing the initial phase of her training in January of this year, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense.

Previously, the princess worked at the Ministry of Defense headquarters in The Hague and completed a general military training course at the Military College for Reservists. During her training, she mastered weapon handling skills, navigation rules, and methods of camouflage in the field.

The tradition of military service in the royal family reflects the monarchy’s long-standing connection to the army, which was established by Prince William of Orange. In the past, members of the dynasty often led troops, and Prince Bernhard was the first Inspector General of the Armed Forces.

King Willem-Alexander began his service in the navy in 1985 and later obtained a military pilot’s license for the Fokker F-27 aircraft. He has participated in army maneuvers and currently holds a special status and military rank within the country’s armed forces.

Queen Máxima also supported the military and, after completing training, became a reservist in the Royal Netherlands Army. She regularly participates in events related to the defense sector.

The presence of members of the royal family in the ranks of the military significantly enhances the prestige of military service amid a severe shortage of volunteers.
