The U.S. will deliver older versions of the M1 Abrams to Ukraine in a shorter time frame, removing them from the reserves of its own armed forces.

The Associated Press reported about this with reference to its own sources in the Pentagon.

The U.S. Department of Defense has decided to send instead of the previously promised M1A2s, an older model of the M1A1 from the Army reserves, which can be prepared for sending more quickly. Tanks can be delivered to Ukraine in 8-10 months.

It was also stated that this decision will facilitate training in the operation and maintenance of M1A1 tanks compared to M1A2 ones for the Ukrainian military.

Pentagon officials are expected to announce the news next Tuesday.

M1A1 Abrams

Currently, instead of manufacturing Abrams tanks from scratch, the U.S. is overhauling and upgrading existing M1s to the M1A2 version, which is taking too long.

M1A1 tanks for Ukraine could come from the Marine Corps, which is replacing M1A1 FEP tanks with more modern models, or from Army training units, according to a former commander of the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence.

In addition to the M1A1 FEP tanks, the U.S. Army still has many M1A1 AIM-SA tanks in service.

The main difference between the basic versions of the M1A2 and the M1A1 is a more powerful armor protection package which tanks equipped with and modern electronics. However, the FEP and AIM-SA versions of the M1A1, which are currently in service with the U.S. Army, have undergone significant modernization, which partially brought them to the M1A2 level.

Therefore, the M1A1 in the AIM-SA and FEP versions received similar modernization packages, which increased the firepower of the tanks.
The tanks received a new main gunner’s sight with an improved Block I 2nd generation thermal imager (FLIR). The fire control system has been updated to use the new M829A3 and M1028 tank rounds. The tank commander also received a new Stabilized Commander’s Weapon Station (SCWS).

The tanks also received an improved power plant (TIGER engine and an improved transmission), which ensures greater reliability and durability.

Regular U.S. Army Abrams modifications receive the Blue Force Tracking (BFT) tracking systems, which provides unit commanders with current information on the location of tanks on the battlefield relative to friendly forces. Most likely, it will be dismantled before being sent to Ukraine, as was the case with the digital units for the M777 howitzers.

Delivery and deployment of a tank battalion in Ukraine

Currently, it is not known when the training of the Ukrainian military in the operation, maintenance and repair of tanks will begin. The previous plan of the U.S. provided that the end of the training of the Ukrainian troops should coincide with the end of the tank training, so that both would be ready for battle in time.

The Pentagon will also have to ensure proper logistics to ensure an adequate supply of all the spare parts needed to keep the tanks in working order. A possible solution to this problem could be a service center for American tanks in Poland, which is currently deployed there in the interests of the Polish army.
