Ukraine is negotiating with Italy to localize the production of CAMM-ER surface-to-air missiles.

This became known from materials related to an investigation by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office into espionage activities conducted by Russian intelligence, La Repubblica reported.

According to the report, Russian intelligence services attempted to obtain information about these defense negotiations and plans for integrating the systems through a former employee of Italy’s security services.

MBDA developed the CAMM-ER missile on the basis of the standard CAMM missile to replace the obsolete Aspide air defense systems in the Italian Army.

In Italy, the missiles are being integrated into the new Grifo air defense system, which is expected to become the backbone of the country’s ground-based air defense.

The extended range of up to 45 km significantly exceeds that of the baseline CAMM missile.

One of the system’s key features is its vertical cold-launch system, in which a gas generator ejects the missile from the launch canister before the main motor ignites.

The missile is equipped with an active radar seeker, allowing it to engage targets in all weather conditions without continuous target illumination by ground-based radar.

It is capable of speeds exceeding Mach 3 while maintaining high maneuverability against aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles.
